Dancing Samba with Ramanujan Partition Congruences

The following is complementary material to an article by Ralf Hemmecke.

http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jsc.2017.02.001

http://www.risc.jku.at/publications/download/risc_5338/DancingSambaRamanujan.pdf

Ramanujan discovered that

  p(5n+4) &\equiv 0 \pmod{5}\label{eq:p5}\
  p(7n+5) &\equiv 0 \pmod{7}\label{eq:p7}\
  p(11n+6) &\equiv 0 \pmod{11}\label{eq:p11}

for all natural numbers n where p(n) denotes the number of partitions of n.

The following witness identities were already known to Ramanujan.

  \sum_{n=0}^\infty p(5n+4)q^n
  &= 5 \prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{5k})^5}{(1-q^k)^6}}
  \
  \sum_{n=0}^\infty p(7n+5)q^n
  &= 7 \prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{7k})^3}{(1-q)^4}}
    + 49 q \prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{7k})^7}{(1-q)^8}}

However, a similar identity for showing that p(11n+6) is divisible by 11 was not known.

Below we present such an identity. The algorithm "samba" (for subalgebra module basis algorithm) to obtain it, is described in the above article (which is accepted for publication in the Journal of Symbolic Computation).

Let us list the generators of the monoid of all quotients of Dedekind \eta-functions of level 22 that only have poles at infinity. See the article by Silviu Radu for more detail:

  @article{Radu:RamanujanKolberg:2015,

  M_1
  &= q^{-5}
    \prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{ k})^7(1-q^{11 k})^3}{(1-q^{2 k})^3(1-q^{22 k})^7}}
  \
  M_2
  &= q^{-5}
    \prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{2 k})^8(1-q^{11 k})^4}{(1-q^{ k})^4(1-q^{22 k})^8}}
  \
  M_3
  &= q^{-6}\prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{2 k})^6(1-q^{11 k})^{6}}{(1-q^{ k})^2(1-q^{22 k})^{10}}}
  \
  M_4
  &= q^{-5}\prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{2 k})(1-q^{11 k})^{11}}{(1-q^{ k})(1-q^{22 k})^{11}}}
  \
  M_5
  &= q^{-7}\prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{2 k})^4(1-q^{11 k})^{8}}{(1-q^{22 k})^{12}}}
  \
  M_6
  &= q^{-8}\prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{ k})^2(1-q^{2 k})^2(1-q^{11 k})^{10}}{(1-q^{22 k})^{14}}}
  \
  M_7
  &= q^{-9}\prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{ k})^4(1-q^{11 k})^{12}}{(1-q^{22 k})^{16}}}

  F
    &= q^{-14}
      \prod_{k=1}^\infty{\frac{(1-q^{ k})^{10}(1-q^{2 k})^2(1-q^{11 k})^{11}}{(1-q^{22 k})^{22}}}
      \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p(11n+6)q^n

Then our witness identity for showing that p(11n+6) is divisible by 11 is this.

F &=
    \begin{split}
    11^2\cdot 3068\, M_7\
    + 11^2\cdot (3\, M_1 + 4236)\, M_6\
    + 11\cdot (285\, M_1+11\cdot 5972)\, M_5\
    +\frac{11}{8}\cdot (M_1^2+11\cdot 4497\, M_1 +11^2\cdot 3156)\, M_4\
    + 11\cdot (1867\, M_1+11\cdot 2476)\, M_3\
    -\frac{11}{8}\cdot (M_1^3+1011\, M_1^2+11\cdot 6588\, M_1 +11^2\cdot
    10880)

Note that this identity does not involve M_2.

Below, we show by means of the FriCAS computer algebra system that indeed the Laurent series agree up to a high order. Actually, by theory it is sufficient that the Laurent series agree in their coefficients for all negative powers and for the constant term.

\title{An implementation of function related to q-calculus}
\author{Ralf Hemmecke}
\date{17-Nov-2014}
\maketitle
\begin{abstract}
This package implements a number of well known q-functions like
qPochhammer, qBinomial as infinite Laurent series.
\end{abstract}
\tableofcontents
\section{Overview} In general we have: \begin{align*} (a; q)_n &= \begin{cases} 1&\text{if $n=0$}\\ \prod_{k=0}^{n-1} (1-a q^k)& \text{if $n>0$}\\ \left(\prod_{k=1}^{-n} (1-\frac{a}{q^k})\right)^{-1}& \text{if $n<0$}\\ \end{cases}\\ (a; q)_{-n} &= \frac{1}{(aq^{-n}; q)_n}\qquad\text{if $n>0$}\\ (a; q) &= \prod_{k=0}^\infty (1-a q^k) \end{align*}
\section{Implementation}
In the following we implement for $n\ge0$: \begin{align*} (c q^r; q^s)_n &= \prod_{k=0}^{n-1} (1-c q^{r+sk})\\ (c q^r; q^s)_{-n} &= \frac{1}{(cq^{r-sn}; q^s)_n} \end{align*}
Note that if $s<0$ and $n>0$ then \begin{align*} (c q^r; q^s)_{n} &= \prod_{k=0}^{n-1} (1-c q^{r+sk})\\ &= \prod_{k=0}^{n-1} (1-c q^{r+s(n-1)-sk})\\ &= (c q^{r+s(n-1)}; q^{-s}) \end{align*}
Let $R$ be a ring and $i\in\setN$, $r, s \in \setZ$, $s>0$, $c_k\in R$ for all $k\in\setN$, $f_i = \prod_{k=i}^{\infty}(1+c_k q^{r+sk})$. Then \[ f_i = (1+c_i q^{r+si}) \cdot \prod_{k=i+1}^{\infty} (1+c_k q^{r+sk}) = (1+c_i q^{r+si})\cdot f_{i+1}. \]
Define $g_i$ by $f_i = 1+q^{r+si} g_i$. Then we have \begin{align*} 1+q^{r+si} g_i &=(1+c_i q^{r+si})\cdot f_{i+1}\\ &=(1+c_i q^{r+si})\cdot (1+q^{r+s(i+1)} g_{i+1})\\ &=1+c_i q^{r+si}+ q^{r+s(i+1)} g_{i+1} + c_i q^{r+si+r+s(i+1)} g_{i+1}. \end{align*} Hence \begin{align*} g_i &=c_i + q^s g_{i+1} + c_i q^{r+s(i+1)} g_{i+1}\\ &=c_i + q^s(g_{i+1} + q^{r+si} c_i g_{i+1}). \end{align*}
For the infinite case we have $c_i=c$ for all $i\in\setN$. For the finite case, we have $c_i=c$ for all $0\le i < n$ and $c_i=0$ for all $i\ge n$.
For the infinite case, we turn the above recursion into \begin{align*} g(r, s) &=c + q^s g(r+s, s) + c q^{r+s} g(r+s, s)\\ &=c + q^s(g(r+s, s) + q^r c g(r+s, s)). \end{align*} This is then implemented by the function \texttt{qpPochhammerAux}.

Obviously, the Laurent series d does not have nonzero coefficients for negative powers of q. In fact, it is identically 0, but due to the fact that it is a Laurent series, it cannot be proven algorithmically, although by the respective theory developed by Silviu Radu, d must be identically 0, if its order is greater than 0.

Below we show that indeed the coefficients of the difference series from q^0 to q^100 vanish. In FriCAS, Laurent series are (not like in other computer algebra systems) truncated series, but rather the information about ALL coefficients is stored lazily and can now be extracted.
